What Is a Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)?

Male breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty or gynecomastia surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess breast tissue and reshapes the pectoral contours to achieve a more masculine appearance. Gynecomastia surgery is personalized to each patients's needs, with the goal of restoring confidence and enhancing self-esteem.

There are several reasons men seek out breast reduction surgery. The most common is due to a condition known as gynecomastia.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia in men often manifests as uneven breasts with the presence of lumps or swelling in one or both breasts. These lumps are typically composed of excess glandular tissue and fat, resulting in an asymmetrical appearance of the chest.

Although gynecomastia is not considered to be a serious health concern, it can have significant psychological and emotional effects on those it affects, which permeates into their self esteem and confidence, adversely impacting their quality of life. In rare occurrences, gynecomastia can be a symptom of a more serious underlying health condition. The onset of gynecomastia can occur at any age, however more than half of all gynecomastia onsets occur during puberty and self-resolve within six months.
Gynecomastia can be brought on due to:
  • Hormonal imbalances (testosterone and estrogen)
  • Genetics
  • Medications (including certain anti-depressants, chemotherapy, anabolic steroids, or anti-androgens)
  • Obesity, which can trigger lower testosterone and higher estrogen production
  • Thyroid disorders
For those looking to get rid of gynecomastia, male breast reduction is a viable options that will decisively address common concerns around the appearances of the pectorals.

Male Breast Reduction, Gynecomastia Surgery Cost

Gynecomastia surgery price varies based on a number of factors unqiue to the patient's given situation.

However, some common variables that are factored into the male reduction surgery cost include:
  • Surgeon's experience and expertise
  • Surgical technique used
  • Extent of correction needed
  • Facility fees
  • Geographic location
  • Preoperative assessments and consultations
  • Postoperative supplies and materials (e.g., medications, post-operative garments)
  • Insurance coverage and reimbursement options

How To Get Gynecomastia Surgery Covered By Insurance

Because gynecomastia surgery is generally considered a cosmetic enhancement and therefore, elective (i.e., not medically required), male breast reduction surgery is not covered by insurance in most cases.

However, there are providers that do offer coverage for gynecomastia under certain medical conditions — consult your individual policy to see if or when coverage or reimbursements could apply to a male breast reduction for you.

By and large, if an insurance provider does cover gynecomastia, it is required to obtain documentation and a referral from a network-approved physician. If the gynecomastia is causing you physical discomfort, pain, or is a symptom of a more serious, underlying condition, you may be able to get insurance to cover a gynecomastia surgery.

As mentioned earlier, which gynecomastia is generally considered a benign condition, it can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious underlying issue. If you are experiencing any of the following, it may be worthwhile to meet with a doctor to discuss your gynecomastia and male breast reduction surgery if desired.

Consider seeing a doctor if you experience:
  • Pain, tenderness, or swelling of the gynecomastia lump
  • Discharge from the nipples
  • Skin in the area begins to ripple or wrinkle
  • Ulcerations at or near the lump site
Even if your insurance provider will not cover the gynecomastia surgery cost, Bliss Aesthetics works with patients to arrange flexible payment plans and advocates on patients' behalf to keep the gynecomastia surgery cost down.

Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction) Recovery Timeline
Immediate Postoperative Period (First Few Days): Immediately following gynecomastia surgery, patients are monitored in a recovery area until they are stable enough to go home. In the first week, it is common to experience pain, discomfort, swelling, bruising, and in the chest area which can be mitigated by medication prescribed by your surgeon.

Compression garments are recommended to minimize swelling and provide support to the chest tissues. Patients should avoid strenuous activities during this initial recovery phase and rest as much as possible.

Week 1
For the first week following a gynecomastia surgery, patients continue to focus on rest and recovery, keeping exercise to a minimum, avoiding lifting heavy objects or strenuous exercise. Follow-up appointments with the surgeon may be scheduled to monitor healing progress and remove sutures or dressings.

Swelling and bruising gradually begin to subside, although some degree of swelling may persist. Patients are encouraged to maintain proper hydration, nutrition, and pain management.

Weeks 2-4
By the second after surgery, most of the initial swelling has subsided. Many patients are fully recovered by the end of the second week, but healing and recovery is individual to your body. Patients may begin to resume light activities and gradually increase their mobility over weeks two through four.

You may have postoperative follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor recovery progress and provide guidance on gynecomastia surgery scar care. Compression garments should continue to be worn as directed by your surgeon to support the healing process.

Weeks 5-12
In the first three months after gynecomastia surgery, swelling and incision scars gradually decline to a fully healed state (if they have not already). Final results start to become more visually apparent. Patients may gradually return to more regular activities and exercise routines.

However, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should still be avoided, particularly exercises that engage pectoral and surrounding muscles.

Additional follow-up appointments with your surgeon may be scheduled to assess long-term results and address any concerns.

Weeks 13–24
Patients can typically resume all normal activities, including exercise and lifting heavier objects. Final postoperative appointments with the surgeon may be scheduled to assess long-term results and provide any necessary guidance for ongoing care.

At Bliss Aesthetics, providing post-operative support is a cornerstone of our commitment to excellent patient care. Our team — including your dedicated Bliss Patient Consultant and surgeon — will remain readily available to address any questions, concerns, and to schedule timely follow-up check-in appointments to ensure your recovery progresses smoothly.
