What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, medically known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic enhancement procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the face and neck by addressing sagging skin, deep creases, and other signs of aging. Skin loses elasticity over time, and this tends to be more noticeable in the face as facial skin in generally thinner and more delicate than in other areas of the body — and even more so for women.

During a facelift, excess skin is removed, underlying tissues are tightened, and muscles may be repositioned to create a more taut and refreshed look. A facelift restores facial definition, enhances firmness, and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and folds, revealing a more vibrant and rejuvenated facial appearance.

Facelift Types
From traditional facelifts to minimally invasive options like the mini facelift, there's a solution to suit every individual's preferences and goals. One of the key differences between types of facelifts involves how deep within the facial tissue, muscles and structures the procedure goes. The deeper, the more drastic and long lasting the results — but also, more expensive and longer facelift recovery times. Deciding which facelift is right for you is a combination of your aesthetic goals as well as your age at the time of the procedure.

These are some of the more common types of facelifts.

Traditional facelift: A traditional facelift typically involves making incisions along the hairline, extending around the ears, and sometimes into the scalp. Through these incisions, underlying facial tissues are lifted, excess skin is removed, and muscles may be tightened to restore a more youthful appearance. Additionally, a traditional facelift often is a combination of smaller, more targeted facial procedures, such as a necklift, a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), a brow lift, and in some cases, small volumes of fat transfers from other areas of the body to restore volume to the face, as well as minimal amounts of liposuction in certain parts, such as the neck and jowels.

Traditional facelifts are most typically sought out by patients in their late 50s and early 60s. The results of a traditional facelift is fairly long-lasting, — 15 years or more if properly maintained.

Mini facelift: A mini facelift, also referred to as a mini-lift or weekend facelift, is a less invasive surgical procedure that is most commonly aimed at tightening the skin around the lower face and neck. Compared to a traditional facelift, a mini facelift involves smaller incisions often limited to the area around the ears or along the hairline.

Through these incisions, underlying facial tissues are tightened, excess skin is removed, and sometimes fat deposits are inserted into pockets of the face that tend of loose volume over time. The mini facelift generally addresses to moderate sagging in the jowls, jawline, and neck, providing less drastic, but noticeable results than a traditional facelift.

Though a mini facelift typically costs less than a traditional facelift, it also is generally not quite as long lasting — usually, about 10 years, more if well maintained. Mini facelifts are typically sought out by patients in their mid to late 40s.

SMAS facelift: Going one layer deeper, an SMAS facelift has much in common with a traditional facelift, except it goes one layer deeper, into a fibrous tissues called the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, which lies beneath the facial skin. Then, SMAS layer is lifted, tightened, and repositioned along with the skin to correct sagging and restore youthful facial contours. SMAS facelifts allows for more comprehensive and longer-lasting results compared to traditional facelifts, which primarily focus on skin tightening.

Deep plane facelift: On the opposite side of the spectrum, there's a deep plane facelift, which goes a step further than a traditional facelift. In contrast to traditional facelifts, which concentrate on skin tightening, a deep plane facelift targets deeper facial tissues, specifically facial muscles, to provide more dramatic and longer-lasting results compared to a traditional facelift.

Facelift Recovery Time
Recovery time will vary from patient to patient and by what type of facelift they had.

Week 1: During the first week, initial swelling and bruising are at their peak. There will be some discomfort and tightness around the face and neck, which can be mitigated with medication prescribed by your surgeon. Activity should be limited to rest and gentle movements. Keep the head elevated to minimize swelling. Follow post-operative care instructions closely, including medication schedule and wound care.

Week 2: Swelling and bruising begin to subside gradually. Pain and discomfort decrease, but some tightness in the face may persist. Light activities such as walking are encouraged — but avoid strenuous exercise. Typically, there will be a post-operative follow up appointment with your surgeon for for monitoring of healing progression. Begin scar management techniques as advised by the surgeon.

Week 3: Swelling continues to decrease, bruising fades, tightness in the face and neck diminishes.
Activity can be dialed up to more moderate levels — but heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should still be avoided. Incorporating gentle facial massage can help promote healing and alleviate tightness.

Week 4: Swelling and bruising should be pretty minimal at this stage in the facelift recovery timeline. Incisions continue to heal, and scars begin to fade. Gradually, you can resume normal daily activities, including light exercise. You may have a second, post-operative appointment with your surgeon for final assessment and discussion of long-term care. Around this time, it's generally acceptable to introduce sunscreen and makeup to camouflage any remaining bruising or scars.

Weeks 5-8: Swelling should be essentially completely resolved, and bruising disappears. Incisions continue and scars become less noticeable. Return to regular exercise routine, but be mindful about avoiding activities that may strain the facial muscles. Around this time, you will begin to enjoy the full benefits of the facelift. You may have a follow up, post-operative appointment with your surgeon for a check up on your healing progression as well as instruction to maintain results long term.

Throughout the post-operative recovery process, your Bliss Patient Consultant will continue to be available to you to answer any questions or concerns you might have throughout your facelift recovery.
