What Is A Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also referred to as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, and contours of the breasts. Breast augmentations involves either the insertion of breast implants or the use of fat transfer techniques to increase breast volume and enhance overall breast symmetry.

Breast augmentation serves various purposes, such as increasing breast size, restoring lost breast volume resulting from weight loss or pregnancy, refining breast shape, or achieving a more balanced figure. Thanks to its high degree of customization, patients can select implants of their preferred size, shape, and type to align with their desired aesthetic goals.

Modern breast implants have made great strides to looking and feeling more natural in recent years. The operation has made great strides in safety and shortening recovery downtime over the last 20 years.

Deciding to get breast implants is a big decision. But consider this: An incredible 96% — of more than 9,000 women surveyed by RealSelf — report having breast implant surgery as “worth it.”

Benefits of A Breast Augmentation
  • Amplified breast size and volume
  • Enhanced breast shape and contour
  • Improved breast symmetry
  • Revert inverted nipped
  • Greater satisfaction with overall appearance
  • Long-lasting results with proper care and maintenance
  • Highly customizable to patient's desired aesthetics
  • Restore balance for breast effected by conditions like Micromastia
Types of Breast Augmentations
  • Breast Implants: Breast implant augmentations involve embedding an implant, usually a silicone shell filled with either saline solution or cohesive silicone gel, placed either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle.

  • Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation: A fat transfer breast augmentation begins with liposuction, where excess fat is collected from another area of the patient's body such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. The fat is then processed to remove impurities and inserted into the breasts to achieve the desired augmentation. Fat transfer breast augmentation offers a natural alternative to traditional breast implants and has the added benefit of liposuction in another area of the body.
It is not uncommon for breast implant and fat transfer augmentations to be done as combinations procedures, along with breast lifts.

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
For those who opt to have a breast implant augmentation, the FDA has approved silicone breast implants for 10–20 years.

Generally, with intermittent check ups and no issues, you can keep breast implants in for even longer. Many people have breast implants for 25+ years with no issues.

However, the older your implants get, particularly after the 10-year mark, the more likely they are to have ruptures, which can lead to further complications. Proper follow up on your implants can extend their longevity.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends having an MRI about five or six years after your initial breast implant operation, and then every two to three years thereafter, in order to check up on your breast implants. As long as there are no issues, you won’t have to exchange or remove your implants on any specific timeline.

Breast Augmentation Recovery
While recovery time can vary from patient to patient, for the majority or people who undergo breast augmentation procedures, works out as follows:

  • Days 1–6: Acute recovery. It is advisable to rest and allow your body to dedicate all of its energy to mending and healing.

  • Weeks 2-3: In this stage, your body will have completed the most critical healing. Your surgeon will provide guidance regarding if you can return to work. For the most part, if your line of work doesn’t require much physical exertion (such as a desk job), you will likely be able to return. You will want to keep your physical activity to a minimum during this period, but should be able to resume most of your daily activities.

  • Weeks 4–6: By now, you will be nearing a complete recovery. To give your body extra runway, you still want to be gentle by avoiding heavy lifting and keeping exercise light.
Here at Bliss Aesthetics, post-operative support is an integral part of what we do. Your Bliss Patient Consultant as well as your surgeon will be available to you to answer any questions, concerns, and follow-up check in appointments to ensure your recovery is going smoothly.
